Doctor to Fix Tongue Tie

Today we received an email from someone that was trying to find a doctor that would perform the snip for Tongue Tie.  The mother and baby were going through a very rough time establishing breastfeeding, and her midwife couldn't find a doctor in their home town (medium sized town in NZ) who would do it.

The Midwife wrote  "I'd like to know where the closest person who can remedy this problem of tongue tie is located. As I have a client who has a 7 day old baby with this problem, and at present can find no one in our area who is willing to assist with this condition."

We were really shocked that it was so difficult to find someone.

Visit your doctor and ask for a referral to your local ENT (Ear nose and throat specialist doctor) with a recommendation that the child's tongue tie be snipped. Not all tongue ties will have a deterimental effect on future speech sound development so that is perhaps why some doctors are reluctant to perform this operation, as they may see it as unneccessary.

Update: Here is another mother's story and her positive results of the snip Baby With Tongue Tie

We couldn't find a Dr or ENT in Wellington to do it but can highly recommend the team at Hutt Hospital Dental. Your GP or midwife can refer you.

We had to have two Tongue Tie Snips for our wee boy. Our first was with Hutt Hospital Dental at 7 days old - they were great and he slept right through it! Unfortunately they advised he had an anterior or distal tongue (further back) that required an oral surgeon to perform the frenectomy. We had to get referred to him but our lactation consultant did that (midwifes can too). From my knowledge he is the only one in Wellington who does it as the Hospital does not. His name is Wayne Gillingham from Oral & Maxillo Facial Surgeons and he performs frenectomies all the time on bubs as wee as ours. He was very supportive and answered all our questions. Only problem is that since it's private there is a cost - was around $170 from memory. Good luck!

Dr Hisham Abdalla from Laser LifeCare Institute in Auckland performs tongue tie procedures with a dental laser - so fast and accurate it was over in a few minutes without any anaesthetic. They even have a relaxation suite where you can go and breast feed straight after the procedure. They are really nice and really look after you. The cost was $650 but well worth every penny, not stressful at all.
